Bui Thi Thuy

Bui Thi Thuy lives in Tan Lap commune, Lac Son district, Hoa Binh province. Her family income is mainly from livestock such as buffaloes, oxen, pigs and chicken.

Prior to the introduction of biogas generators, the livestock waste affected the health and sanitation of Bui Thi Thuy’s family and surrounding households. It polluted surrounding lakes and caused various infectious diseases, such as diarrhea and blue ear disease.

From late 2011, MFCDI combined with Luxembourg Embassy to deploy a biogas project in Hoa Binh province. Her family wished to participate and was able to obtain approval for 6,000,000 VND (300 USD) to build a biogas generator over 12m3.

Since then, Bui Thi Thuy’s family has reduced the firewood used for daily cooking and lighting by half. Using biogas as an alternate energy source, air quality has improved because her family has reduced indoor smoke.

Bui Thi Thuy also produces organic agriculture, as she has replaced chemical fertilizers with organic manure processed from biogas generators. She is also able to divert her time to other value-adding opportunities, as she is not spending several hours every day collecting firewood. The larger revenues generated have allowed Bui Thi Thuy to increase her ownership from five pigs to twenty.

In addition to providing fuel for her family, leftover fuel from the biogas generator is shared amongst her neighbors and has strengthened the village’s solidarity.
