Ta Thi Loan

I have to try more so that my children do not have to quit school

As the youngest daughter in a family with 4 children in Thanh Ha, Nam Son commune, Ha Noi, Ta Thi Loan was a smart woman by nature. She had a happy family with a kind husband and 4 lovely children. Her life was well set up to be stable with her job as a farmer and her husband as worker.

However, her life completely changed after five year old Nguyen Thi Hang, her youngest daughter, suffered from a fever and developed syncionus symptom. After bringing her to the hospital, Mrs Loan was shocked to learn that her child was suffering from meningitis. Previously, Hang was a healthy and smart little girl, but now she could not speak, her nerve system was deeply affected, and she is no longer aware of what she is doing.

With such a disease, she could not go to school. Sometimes, when they could not find anyone to look after her, they had to let the child stay home alone. "I really feel sorry for our little child, but we don't know what to do" she said. Despite the fact that money is still a problem for the family, Mrs. Loan and her husband are still trying to bring their child to the hospital with the hope that she will one day overcome the disease. These medical expenses have now reached hundreds of millions of VND. Their house, which has been in poor condition for a long time, could not be upgraded because their savings and loans from relatives have been used in attempts to cure their daughter. Hang's health is now not stable.

In addition to this difficulty, the family also suffered an unlucky even while taking their children to school. An accident caused Mrs. Loan to break her leg, and after only one month of treatment in the hospital she returned home to be cared for by relatives. After the accident Mr Tuan, her husband, had to work as the family’s sole provider to cover their expenses and take care of their children. He had to try to earn enough money for medication for his wife and daughter, as well as school fees for his children. Every day he works for other people as contruction worker with a wage of 1,500,000 VND per month.

These consecutive accidents in a short period of time have made their life become much more difficult. All of their hopes now depend on the contruction work of Mr Tuan. Although their family is facing difficulty, Mr. Tuan is still willing to support his daughter's schooling. "Our family will try to support her to finish university, and thus we have to try many more times," he said.

We visited her family and gave her a small gift. We hope that she and her daughter will soon recover so that her daughter can continue going to school and she can return to her regular daily life. We also hope for her to once again be a person for her husband and child to lean against and to help them get over their hardships.

Pham Thi Nhai

A poor family calling for help

Mrs Pham Thi Nhai, a member of the MFCDI Fund and her husband Mr Dao Van Thuan live in hamlet 3, Nghia Ninh commune, Dong Hoi District, Quang Binh province. Mr Thuan is often ill due to the effects that a landmine had upon his legs during the war, and has also been constantly suffering from arthropathy and stomachaches. Although the family is very poor, the parents have always tried to support their children’s education with the hope that their children will be able to have a better life. In thorough understanding of their parents’s wishes, all four of the children are obedient and study well, and two have passed the entrance exam for university.

During May Day in 2011, Mrs Nhai and her second son went to work in another district to get more money to cover school fees. On their way home, they were involved in a traffic accident. As a consequence, Mrs. Nhai’s neck and her son’s patelliform were broken. In order to afford treatment and medication, Mr. Thuan had to borrow money from relatives and get increased support from neighbours. In total, the accident left him VND 100 million in debt. At the moment, Mrs. Nhai and her son are in better condition but have not completely recovered yet. Her son is currently having further treatment, but doctors say he needs at least one year to make a full recovery.  It would be the best if Mrs. Nhai could return to hospital as well, but to save money she chose to instead receive part-time treatment and stay at home.

Feeling happy that his wife and son have overcome this obstacle, Mr. Thuan always encourages his family that “life is the best treasure”. Although the family is becoming poorer, he is trying to maintain a stable income.

We visited their family one day, and what really made us think is that their childrens’ dreams of going to school cannot come true with so many challenges in the family. The third child in the family has put aside his schooling for the moment, and instead works to be able to afford medication for the rest of the family. The youngest daughter will graduate from High school in one year, but it is hard for her dream of attending university to come true.

To help this family overcome these challenges and have a stable life, and to support the chances of continued schooling for their children, we really call for the contributions and sympathy of organizations and individuals.

Ban Thi Mai

We went to visit the Ban Thi Mai family at Ruoc Hamlet,  Suoi Nanh commune. These highlands are particulary difficult to travel and live in in Da Bac district, Hoa Binh Province.

Mrs. Mai was married in 1985. Her husband suffered from mental illness and could not help her with any housework, so all the worries about ensuring economic life for the whole family fell upon her shoulders. Her family is very poor, and they do not have any valuable material possessions or a large enough home to live in. Their house was built using soil and bamboo, and has a palm leaf roof. She has two children who are of age – her daughter is the oldest, and her son did not attend school or get a job because there was not enough money for the children to continue their education. As a result, both children live at home and depend upon their parents for their income. The family’s main source of income is cultivation and farming, but her family has little land and few fields to plow: it is not enough to sustain them. Her family has to eat cassava and maize in order to live. She also must do extra work such as hiring and managing employees in order to save money to take care of her children and husband, with an income of  20 000 to 50 000 vnd. With little money, she worries about the daily costs for the whole family, as savings are typically used to buy medicine for her husband and children when they are sick. Due to how hard she works on a daily basis her health is not a guarantee; she is often ill and has difficulty maintaining a high enough body weight.  In 2012, even more misfortune came to her family: the roof of their house blew away during a storm. Due to a lack of money to buy materials, the entire family had to live in that same house without a roof. Not only this, but her son was later in a car accident and suffered a brain injury, requiring long-term hospital care. Though the family had faced difficulties before, they were now facing even worse circumstances. When we arrived, she said with tears, “I don’t know how to manage to pay for treatment for my son, medication for my husband, and I am worried about fixing the roof  if there is going to be another storm.”

Her family is currently facing great difficulty. Therefore, she hopes to receive help from the community and donors so that her family can overcome these difficulties and misfortunes.
